What is web content writing?

Content writing is, as the name suggests, a process of producing texts of various kinds. These texts can take the form of blog articles, category descriptions or product sheets (e-commerce), scripts for podcasts, tweets, white papers, etc. Formerly used mainly for blogs, web copywriting has now become a real marketing challenge for all web players.

What are the objectives of content writing

The objectives of web writing are numerous and depend on the platform on which the articles are published. On blogs, the aim of writing content is to build a loyal readership and ultimately, for most bloggers, to generate passive income thanks to their reputation and traffic. Content written for online shops has two objectives. The first is to improve the natural referencing of the site by enriching the pages with optimised content. Semantics are of great importance here. Some other content published on e-tailers also aims to improve the visibility of the brand but also to develop its brand strategy. This type of content includes storytellingtutorials, buying guides, copywriting ...

How to produce quality web content?

The requirements of the robots of the various search engines have become considerably more stringent in recent years. It is no longer a question of writing a grammatically correct text, without spelling mistakes and containing X occurrences of its main keyword. It goes much further! Quality content must be exhaustive, precise and illustrated, but above all, it must respond to the user's intention. Your content must be in phase with your target.

What is a web editor?

The job of a web editor is quite different from that of a freelancer or journalist who publishes on the web. It requires knowledge of SEO and marketing, which is why it is not always easy to find a good web editor, especially when the subject matter is technical.

The mission of the web editor is to produce content that responds to a brief, while respecting the positioning and values of the brand.

Writing for content to be seen

While some texts are primarily intended for Google's robots robots (this is often the case for category descriptions in online shops), the majority of texts written by professionals are intended to be seen by Internet users. They must therefore include catchy headlines and contain media (images, videos, gifs, etc.) that will capture the reader's attention and keep him or her on the page as long as possible.

Writing to be read

The mission of the web writer is also to produce a fluid and clear text that makes people want to read it. They must therefore use sentences that are understandable to everyone, while demonstrating a certain expertise in the subject. But the content of the web editor is also read by robots. It must therefore contain specific keywords to be correctly interpreted.

How to write for the web?

Writing for the web therefore requires compliance with a number of SEO and marketing constraints to attract readers and robots.

There is one golden rule for writing good text: write for the readers, not for yourself. A good web writer must consider what readers really want to read. Who are they? What are their interests? What questions do they have that led them to this content? It is essential to consider the search intent of the user when creating web content. This is the reason why a person performs a specific search. A user's search intent determines how they will view the content.

To meet this intention, the first step is to carry out a keyword study to find out which terms and expressions are most searched for by Internet users. It is on the basis of these precise terms that the web editor will be able to respond to the search intention in his article. There are different types of searches: transactional, navigational, commercial and informational. If the target keyword is informational and the content is transactional, not only does it risk not being positioned by Google, but it will also be badly perceived by users.

To be attractive, the text must be readable. This means that the sentences must be short and clear and the whole must be sufficiently well spaced out. Too much text without headings or paragraphs tends to scare people away.

Optimising content for the web requires SEO skills and certain semantic tools to guide the writing.

In web writing, subheadings are not just simple subheadings. They are formatted in H1, H2, H3 tags which constitute a framework for the robots. The latter attach particular importance to these Hn tags, which is why it is important to define their structure well. Although the order of the tags in the code is not important, the hierarchy of the information is crucial. The title tag is also part of the web writer's job. It should contain the main keywords and make the user want to click on the blue link in the search results. The meta description tag also has a direct influence on the click-through rate. It should therefore include the main marketing arguments.

To be understood by robots, the writer must use all the keywords belonging to the semantic field of the targeted keyword. Semantics is indeed necessary to give meaning to the text but also relevance to the different links that make up the internal mesh.
